  • An Open Letter to Hot-Blooded Young Men

    Image

Grace attracts sinners. Since I am someone who preaches radical grace, I get a lot of emails and Facebook messages from sinning Christians. Very few are looking for help in overcoming sin; almost all of them want an assurance that God will continue to love them despite their bad behavior. More often than not, these messages come from young men who are living as though they were married, even though they are not.

Since I grow weary of being an an agony aunt for men who should know better, this post is addressed to all of you who are wrestling with sin, but particularly to hot-blooded young males. Here are my responses to five commonly asked questions:

    1. Will God love me if I keep sinning?

Yes, absolutely! I know this is not what manmade religion has told you, but you need to know that God’s love for you is unrelated to your moral performance. He loves us because He is love. “For God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son” (Joh 3:16). Are you part of “the world”? Then God loves you. “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Rom 5:8).

There are many variables in life but God’s love is the one constant you can bank on. You can be certain that He loves you. A far better question to ask is, “Do you know and enjoy His love?” The prodigal’s father loved him constantly but the prodigal did not know and benefit from his love for as long as his attention was elsewhere.

Every one of us has needs. These needs are designed to lead us to Jesus (see Php 4:19). If you’re not getting your needs met in Jesus, you will make inferior choices – and this is where the trouble starts.

    2. Does God’s grace mean I can continue to live in sin?

No. Grace brings freedom and yes, that includes the freedom to make poor choices, but if you use your freedom to enslave yourself to sin or religion, you have completely missed the point of grace (Gal 5:1).

A Christian who runs after sin is like a prisoner who has been released into the custody of gracious king, who then uses his freedom to re-offend and do all the things that got him imprisoned in the first place. Now our King is extremely gracious. He won’t send you back to prison. But you may send yourself there.

The King of kings didn’t give His life as your ransom just so that you run back to the clay-pits Egypt. That’s going in the wrong direction. Egypt is history. We’ve got places to go and grace is going to take us there. Move on to the Promised Land of His love for that is where life really begins.

    3. Will I lose my salvation if I choose to keep sinning?

No. Jesus is your salvation; the Holy Spirit is your eternal guarantee (2 Cor 1:22). If sinning caused us to lose our salvation, then heaven would be empty.

But the question troubles me. Religion has got us so obsessed with making heaven and avoiding hell that we’ve put life on hold. The earth is not a waiting room for eternity. This is the place where Real Life begins (see Joh 17:3)! Don’t put your life on hold by living captive to the flesh. Salvation is not there and then; it’s here and now. God’s will is for you to experience heaven-on-earth today. But choose the way of sin – make dumb decisions, sow to the flesh – and you’ll experience hell-on-earth.

Religion would have us frame the questions of life in terms of good and evil. “Shouldn’t we do good and avoid evil?” But this is fruit from the forbidden tree; it is not the heavenly metric of grace. It’s not that the question is inherently bad, it just won’t lead you anywhere near the right Answer.

We don’t earn grace by doing good; neither do we forfeit grace by doing evil. If anything, His grace shines all the more when we sin (Rom 5:20). The purpose of grace is to give you life where sin has given you death. Grace is the antidote to the poison of sin. Now that you’ve been saved from death, stop drinking the poison. Drink instead from the well of His life.

    4. If God loves me and my salvation is secure, then why can’t I keep doing what I’m doing?

Because sin is stupid. It’s like texting on the freeway. Just because you can do it, doesn’t mean you should. The world will tell you that “if it feels good, do it” and “as long as it’s harming no one, what’s the problem?” But these two mantras are flawed. Live from your feelings and you’ll end up enslaved to your appetites. You will be a shadow of your real self.

This is the true message of the cross. When we seek to save ourselves by doing what seems right in our own sight, we lose ourselves, but when we trust Him, then we really live. Understand that I am not calling you to take a vow of chastity. Aside from the fact that law-based solutions don’t work, this is not the life God has called us to. Following Jesus is not about starving the flesh – that’s asceticism and it’s as much a flesh-trip as any indulgence. Following Jesus is about reckoning yourself dead to the world and it dead to you and allowing Him to live His life through you. Trust me – His life is way more fun than yours!

“As long as it’s harming no one…” How do you know it’s not harming no one? Do you have perfect knowledge of the future? Do you know for sure that this lady you’re keeping house with is going to be your wife and not the wife of some other man? Will she be the mother of your children or the mother of someone else’s children? If you are certain that she will be your wife for life, then marry her. But if you’re uncertain, then stop playing games and grow up. Be a man. People are far too precious to fool around with.

    5. I can’t help myself. I’m not sure that I could stop even if I wanted to.

That’s not a question; that’s a declaration of unbelief in the grace of God that empowers us to say no to ungodliness (Tit 2:12).

In the natural it may be true that you are enslaved to addiction. You may be so deep in a rut that you can’t see the sun. But that doesn’t mean you are without help and without options. Come on – your Helper is God! No one is beyond the reach of His transforming love and grace. I’ve met countless people who have been completely changed from one kind of person into another by His grace. In the kingdom of His grace this happens all the time.

But transformation rarely happens among those who don’t believe. So stop looking at yourself as a victim. Stop speaking lies over your life – that’s rampant unbelief in the Son of God who lives in you. Look instead to your Mighty Redeemer. Confess your true identity in Christ. When you get up in the morning and another day of sin beckons, look at yourself in the mirror and say, “I am my Father’s Son and He loves me! I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. As He is in heaven, so am I in this world!”

I’m not preaching faith plus self-effort. I’m preaching faith in His mighty grace!

Beliefs need to be spoken and acted upon for them to become real in our experience. The world will try and tell you that you are the product of your choices and behaviors. But God says you are His dearly beloved son. So choose who you would listen to and be who you really are.

This is not the place where I talk about overcoming sin. If you would like help in that direction, I recommend, for the younger men, this excellent post by Daniel Silva, and for the older men, this post and this book by Bill Gillham.

e2r_windowFor now, I will end with this: Any theology that doesn’t empower you to overcome sin is worse-than-useless. It leaves people worse off because it saddles them with guilt and condemnation. This is why grace is infinitely better than law-based religion. Grace is not a set of rules that condemn, it is a victorious Overcomer living His overcoming life through you.

  • VALUE RELATIONSHIPS

MemorizationMy 5 year old daughter is in a Christian school and one of the beautiful things they do in her school is to help the kids to be well versed in the Bible through scripture memorization in diverse ways. I can never forget her first scripture she learned to memorize as a three year old as long as I live. This scripture verse sticks so well into my heart due to the way she would confess it as a kid. In this verse, we are instructed by the Holy Spirit to be kind, tenderhearted and to be forgiving towards one another in all of our dealings with men – Ephesians 4:32 (ESV) Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Beloved, do you loved to be forgiven, receiving kindness in so many ways and appreciate tenderhearted people? I heard a big YES in my ears already! Do you struggles to do the same unto others? The depth of our understanding of how much God loved us and forgave us when we didn’t even deserve it, will soften our hearts in loving others in whatever capacity we find ourselves. (See John 3:16, Romans 5:8)

Do you know that we live in a society where many people don’t understand the value of relationships and therefore treat people like a junk? You don’t love and appreciate 394123_2100521892485_1828561381_1323881_848976779_nsomeone because they’re perfect, you love and appreciate them in spite of the fact that they are not.  “Perfection” is a deadly fantasy – something none of us will ever be.  It is only in Christ we are made perfect. So beware of your tendency to “fix” someone when they’re NOT broken.  They are perfectly imperfect, just the way they should be.

The support you can gather from good friends, groups, family and mentors is formidable. The hope and encouragement you can give them in return is also very vital, even your mentors and those you look up to always needs a little encouragement and love. We were created for relationship with God vertically and horizontally with men in an unconditional atmosphere of love and acceptance. No matter where you’re coming from and what has happened to you through your dealings with people, you don’t have to cut yourself from people and live isolated minding your own business.

Friends are, of course invaluable – they help you both to create and recreate. People who love us for what we are and not what we have already done are great support when we are trying to do and be more. One great key to walking into divine purpose is learning to discern the nuggets of gold in men with rough outer dispositions. Many missed great access to the realm of their destiny because they could not recognize their helpers and treat them like aliens because of their prejudice mentality.

Relationships are not accidental. If God want to use you to impact your world, He has to involve people into your life to bring His will to reality. Satan also operates through this same principle in a very diabolical way; if the devil wants to destroy your life or fizzle the purpose of your life, he releases negative people into your life or create unnecessary tension between you and the people who influences you. (Your Parents, Boss, Pastor, Friends, Wife, Husband, neighbor, Employees. etc.)

Value people more than the things of this world and learn to maintain relationships through thick and thin. A well-known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a imagesCAF2TDO1$20.00 bill. In the room of 200, he asked, “Who would like this $20 bill?” Hands started going up. He said, “I am going to give this $20 to one of you but first, let me do this. He proceeded to crumple up the $20 dollar bill. He then asked, “Who still wants it?” Still the hands were up in the air. Well, he replied, “What if I do this?” And he dropped it on the ground. And started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now crumpled and dirty. “Now, who still wants it?” Still the hands went into the air.

My friends, we have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $20. Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value. Friends also fall into this same category, and I don’t think they lose their value to be treated as trash.

Dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you and yours are still priceless to those who DO LOVE them. The worth of our lives comes not in what we do or who we know, But by WHO WE ARE. “You are special, make others feel the same – Don’t EVER forgets it.”

  • CUTEST BABY WORSHIP GOD

If these remain silent I can raise stones to praise me. Watch this little kid worship God so gracefully and be ignited to draw near into God’s presence where pleasures abound.

  • DIDN’T KNOW CHRISTIANITY IS MISERY

Yes, I was a Christian and a lover of God and yet was still bound and contained in a prison of a joyless miserable life! My heart bleeds for you and overprayer_large millions of believers around the world who feels miserable in their Christian journey than they used to be as unsaved men. Lack of real peace, hope, direction, purpose, health and a host of precious promises wrought for us through the finish work of Christ are missing in their life experiences.

SHOULDN’T IT BE THE OPPOSITE? Sure! Heaven has invaded our hearts with the fullness of Christ and the life we live becomes a reflection of His life not ours anymore. The preacher man was not different from all of us…He preached John 10:10…He has come that we might have life and have it more abundantly with passion and zeal but his belly was full of regret and sitting at his old office is an antique bag loaded with many questions than answers (unpaid bills, lack of income, joyless congregants and the lack of growth for a Church which was celebrating 25 years in existence)

I SAY IT AGAIN, I WAS BOUND… I was bound in self works. I was a master of focusing on “my ability” “will power” “self effort” to get access to the treasure-house of God’s abundant riches. The more I tried instead of trusting, the more I became frustrated. My motivation was a work oriented mode to twist the hand of God to release what belongs to me. Can you imagine a mere man trying to bribe the creator of heaven and earth with $100 just to earn some points? God doesn’t need my hundred dollars for nothing. He loves me with a high-octane love to lavish me freely all that I need as His covenant child without me having to persuade Him with my King James grammatical jargons.

HOW COULD I HEAR HIS LOVING VOICE WHEN I AM INDULGE IN PERFORMANCE? His loving voice echoes through the sapphire gates of heaven to my performance oriented camp; “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” Matthew 7:11 (NKJV” How can I embrace such caring heart of a loving God who wishes nothing but only goodness for His children? Was so busy with dogmas and errors of man centered traditions. My doctrine was like a cataract on my eye…was so blind to see His goodness and completely deaf to hear His loving voice which sound like the sound of many waters. What makes you think that you love your children more than the way God loves you? My friends will be shock to see my little girl Moriah, crawling on her face begging and pleading with me like a slave to drink the orange juice in the refrigerator. She know her dad loves her and when she asks for an orange juice, she ask from a place or love and not beggarly.

GALATIA CHAPEL OF USA… Paul asks the Galatians Church…Galatians 3:5 (NKJV)  Therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?—

GOD SUPPLIES, GOD WORK MIRACLES AMONG US. We have become masters over circumstances. We don’t walk in fear no more. He manifest His power through our weak vessels as we place our faith in what is already done in Christ Jesus. Jesus has now become our principal focus and not in our bankrupt self. Miracles does not happen because I need to work hard or qualify through Church registry…I can receive my healing or become a conduit of healing and hope for the broken-hearted and the downtrodden. Isn’t it wonderful to know that all that God need from you and me to change every impossible situation in our life is to trust in His word and stop trying! The reason for the lack of miracles in the body of Christ is due to self sitting on the throne. We ask; “do I have what it takes to do the uncommon“. It’s not about you anymore my friend…your focus has change from your weakness to His ability through you.

HAVE YOU EVER HEARD PEOPLE SAY WITH DISPAIR; “Christianity is very difficult”?  Christianity is not just difficult, it’s impossible without the indwelling presence of Christ behaving through us. Christianity is Christ plus nothing…it is not a religion of do’s and don’ts. It is the life of Christ in you. Until you understand it from that perspective, you will find yourself in total bondage to a religion of self which has no promise of freedom and hope. Nobody was better than Paul when it comes to self effort to earn the f8f512d4d224f1675df2de1579f7-postunmerited grace of God’s fullness in us. He never find the fulfillment until His foundational beliefs system was dismantled and new perspective of who he is in God through Christ was attained. Listen to Paul in Galatians 2:20.I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I, who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me”.

Paul was saying; this is the new way to the fullness of God. Any other way makes Christianity miserable and impossible.

Joy, power, hope, faith, life, love and what have you becomes possible when we yield our lives completely on the altar of grace to plug-in to His life through faith as we come to the end of self who sits on the throne. Self is miserable my friend…I never saw any good thing in me after the Church told me; Christ will brighten your day and give you hope to live a quality life. Low self-esteem, fear, poverty, pointless life was not a quality of life! The Church failed to tell me; “It was all about Christ life in me that sharpens my mental capacity to walk in the wisdom of God and it’s not about my skill but His skill through my hands and feet”. This perspective place the burden on Christ and neo on myself.

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. (John 15:5)

Are you struggling with self? Is life miserable for you and t seems like the sky s fallen on your head. Don’t throw in the towel and be griped with condemnation and guilt. Jesus so dearly loves you and He is right at the door of your heart knocking.

Will you open the door of your heart and look into His face with faith in your heart and say; “Yes Lord” to all that He has already made available for you in yorightur born again spirit? Come appropriate the goodness of God and live daily with a smile on your face, because your savior is seated in royal authority and victory with you in mind.

  • The Cure for Guilt

The other day I lost my temper. It was only for a moment, but it was enough. Damage was done. Later, I felt sick about what I did and took steps to make amends. This is how guilt works. Guilt is a signal that our lives have been disrupted by sin. Guilt is a sign that a hurt needs to be healed.

    But there’s a problem.

Ever since sin was given free leash in the Garden of Eden, guilt has gotten out of control. We feel guilty for things we did and didn’t do. When we do well we feel guilty for not doing better. And when we fail, guilt pounds us. Worst of all, guilt never goes away. Like an alarm that won’t switch off, guilt is the soundtrack to our lives.

Burdened by guilt we may turn to religion in the hope of finding relief. Instead, we encounter the condemning ministry of the law. Religion tells us we’re even worse than we thought. We have not only let down friends and family, we’ve let down God.

With religious zeal we try to make the guilt go away but it’s no use. We keep nine laws but break the tenth. We’re good six days a week but stumble on the seventh. No matter how hard we work, the guilt pile just keeps growing.

    Guilt is a killer

I am convinced that guilt and condemnation are at the root of many of our health problems. Guilt breaks us. Our emotional bones were made soft for love, not hard for guilt-bearing.

I was a pastor for ten years and I can tell you that a lot of counseling done in the church is guilt-based. Pastors spend the much of their time helping others manage their guilt. Which is ironic since pastors are the ones making folk feel guilty in the first place. (Please don’t feel condemned my preaching brothers! But please stop preaching mixture. It’s making others sick and sucking the life out of you.)

I’m not here to point fingers. We’re talking about the crippling effects of guilt.

If only there was a cure for guilt. There is!

Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. (Heb 10:22)

Since the cross is God’s cure for your sin, it is also the cure for your guilt. Do you battle with guilt? Then look to the cross. Your sins are there not here.

    Cat_in_hat

    Justified = not guilty

To be guilty means to be held responsible for your sin. I’m all for taking responsibility for our mistakes but when it comes to sin all the responsibility in the world isn’t going to clear your sinful name. Your sin burden is simply too great.

On the cross, Jesus took responsibility for all our sin. He literally became sin and in him all sin was condemned (Rom 8:3). The gospel declares your sin problem has met its match in Jesus Christ.

Do you know what this means?

Under law, the best of us is justly charged guilty of sin. But under grace, the worst of us is justly charged righteous, on account of Jesus (2 Cor 5:21).

This is one of the most profound revelations of grace yet many miss it. They say, “I know I am righteous and justified but I still feel guilty.” Connect the dots. If you are righteous and justified, you are not guilty.

“But, Paul, I feel guilty.” That feeling is a symptom of unbelief in the goodness of God. Don’t let that feeling run around like a rat in the attic. Deal with it. Take that feeling and make it bow to the obedience of Christ.

He has forgiven you all your sins: Christ has utterly wiped out the damning evidence of broken laws and commandments which always hung over our heads, and has completely annulled it by nailing it over his own head on the cross. (Col 2:13-14, Phillips)

Under the law, there was a long list of charges against you. “You’re a lazy Christian, a lousy parent, and a poor excuse for a human being.” Want to know what Jesus thinks of those charges against you? He nailed them to the cross. Don’t agree with those charges. Agree with Jesus!

    Guilt from the Bible?

Many Christians battle with guilt because they’ve not fully grasped the finished work of the cross. They’re filtering life through the obsolete lens of the rule-keeping covenant.

Guilt is what you get when you are constantly told you are not doing enough, giving enough, praying enough. Since this mixed-up message is the predominant theme of graceless Christianity, is it any wonder guilt has become an epidemic?

Much of what gets done in the name of the Lord is motivated by guilt. “Jesus died for you, what will you do for him?” Crumbs. I’d better roll up my sleeves and get busy. “There are people going to hell because you are not evangelizing. Sign up for our outreach and make your guilt go away.” It’s appalling. It’s manipulation of the worst kind and it is about as far from Jesus as you can get.

Making matters worse, many of our Bibles were translated by the guilt-conscious. Do you know how many times the words “guilt” and “guilty” appear in the New Testament? The answer depends on which Bible you’re reading:

2    Young’s Literal Translation 3    American Standard Version 6    King James 13    Message Bible 16    New International Version 34    Good News 45    Amplified

What do these numbers mean? They reveal how much guilt is in your reading diet. For instance, if you read the NIV you’re getting nearly triple the guilt that you’d get from the KJV. If you read the Amplified, you’re getting nearly eight times.

Some Bibles should come with a health-warning: “Contains added guilt and traces of religious nuts.”

I looked up all the Greek words for “guilt” and “guilty” in Vines and found there are very few. In fact, Vines spends more time listing words that have been incorrectly translated as guilty. I won’t bore you with the details of my study but here’s an interesting question:

Do you know how many verses there are that say Christians are guilty?

Answer: Zero. Nada. Not one. So the next time you hear a message that makes you feel guilty – that seeks to hold you accountable for something you’ve done or not done – you can safely reject it as unbiblical.

When I lost my temper the other day, I apologized and quickly made amends. There was nothing religious about that. It’s just love. It’s common sense. But dead religion would’ve said, “Paul, you’ve not done enough. Every sin is a sin against God. On account of your sin you are now out of fellowship with him. You broke it, so you fix it. Examine your heart, confess your sin before God and he will wipe your slate clean.”

Such a message appeals to our religious flesh but it’s an anti-Christ and anti-cross pile of manure. Instead of leading you back to the one you hurt, it’ll cause you to withdraw and stare at your navel. Instead of thanking God that in Christ you are always righteous, you’ll waste time asking him to do what he’s already done. Instead of laying hold of the grace that empowers you to sin no more, you’ll beat yourself up like a religious flagellant.

(If you think I’m against confession, I’m not. And if you want to write in and tell me about 1 John 1:9, read this first.)

Learn the new language of grace

Guilt may be the lingua franca of dead religion but it wasn’t a language the New Testament writers spoke. It’s certainly not a language they speak in heaven. If you speak the faithless language of guilt, may I suggest you learn the new language of God’s love and grace.

When you have seen the finished work of the cross, it changes the way you look at your mistakes and failings. You no longer dwell on your weaknesses – there’s no power there. Instead, you fix your eyes on Jesus who was “delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification” (Rom 4:25).

ImperfectionsWhen you sin, the accuser will seek to bring a case against you. And in the eyes of the flawless law, he has a good case! However, the issue is not whether you have stumbled but whether Jesus has been raised. If he has been raised then you have been justified. Case dismissed.

It takes no faith to look at your mistakes and condemn yourself. It takes faith to look at Christ and say, “Because of you, I have been judged not guilty for all time. Thank you, Jesus!” —
